For years, I lived on the east side of town (Sunrise Mountain area). And yet I stepped foot in the Showboat/Castaways maybe 5-6 times. Hit a Royal once while a friend of mine was chowing down on one of their typical “Las Vegas Local’s Joint” meal specials.
Can’t say I’ll miss it, although I do respect the history of The Showboat.
What I am truly wondering is what in the world Station Casinos has planned that will make any money there. The surrounding neighborhood isn’t exactly Green Valley or Summerlin (not does it bring the deep pockets of residents of the more upscale areas of Las Vegas).
It made sense to buy it and shut it down to protect Boulder Station. Boulder is the closest local’s joint to a significant portion of the Las Vegas Valley (high income or not).
But to build something there? Either they are planning to run some slot joint to keep a license alive, or they are going to jump on the “revive downtown las Vegas” bandwagon … get the Mayor touting their plans, make a big splash … then be slow to build until the area between their property and downtown gets revived (which it will over the next five years).
Be interesting to watch.
