Las Vegas Travel Tips
How to get there, how to get around, where to find stuff and how to ask for it. These are tips from the local insider to make your stay here a breeze
Free ‘dive-in’ movies at the Mandalay Bay pool
Thanks to our friend Jen Leo at the Los Angeles Times, we’ve been alerted to a really cool program over at the Mandalay Bay over the next month. They are featuring ‘Dive-In Movies’ out by the pool on three nights, and it won’t cost you a cent. The clever name alone might be enough to get me to show up, although they’ve actually chosen 3 pretty good movies as well.
These are R-rated movies that start at 9pm, so even though this might seem like a worthwhile novelty for the little ones, these are 21+ events so this probably isn’t the best place for them. The Mandalay Bay invites you to, “Come out and watch a widescreen flick while floating in the pool or lounging on the beach,” which sounds pretty nice compared to sitting in this office.

June is a good month for booking Las Vegas hotels
You may have heard that Las Vegas hotels have not been immune from the economic downturn that is all over the news at the moment. Combine that with the fact that summer is traditionally one of the slower seasons in this city already, and you’ve got some furious competition for visitors. This, of course, is all good news for anyone looking to book a trip to Las Vegas right now.
We’ve just added a bunch more special offers to our Las Vegas Deals section, and now we have more sensational bargains than ever before. Nearly every major casino is offering special incentives to lure in visitors, and many of them are valid for trips through the summer or even trips through the end of the year.

Cheap buses to Las Vegas featured on new travel deals site
This recent post on a new travel deals site called cheaptravelscout.com caught our eye because it deals with a new bus company that goes from Los Angeles to Las Vegas at prices starting at $1 and going up to $34, it seems. With airfare getting out of hand these days, this company might be worth looking in to, especially if you can book way in advance to get one of the super cheap fares.

NASCAR Events Around Las Vegas
This is a big NASCAR weekend in Las Vegas, but the events aren’t just happening on the track. Various other points around Las Vegas will play home to race-related activities.
On Thursday, February 28th, nearly 50 NASCAR haulers will parade their respective race cars in a ceremonial drive that starts at 2:30pm just south of Mandalay Bay on Las Vegas Blvd. They will drive north from there to Sahara and then make their way to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Not only will the general sidewalks be good for viewing, but some …

You’ll find photos of most of the Strip hotels in the sets, as well as some of the classic motels in the North Strip and East Fremont areas. If you’ve yet to make it to Las …

Fremont Street Experience and why it’s so worth seeing
While Downtown Las Vegas doesn’t get nearly the attention that the Las Vegas Strip does these days, there is at least one reason why nearly every visitor to the city should go out of their way to get to Downtown at least once during their stay. The Fremont Street Experience is one of the most amazing spectacles you’ll ever see, and it’s absolutely free and no tickets are need.
What is the Fremont Street Experience?
In 1994 the city took a major step in trying to revitalize the downtrodden Downtown area, by completely closing it to traffic and covering it with a giant roof. The first version of the multi-media Fremont Street Experience debuted soon after that, and as impressive as it was, in 2004 there was a major overhaul that put the thing into a new category of amazing.
Now the system is called Viva Vision and it’s made up of over 12.5 million synchronized LED lights that accompany a 550,000-watt sound system. The domed roof, which runs for 5 full blocks over Fremont Street, becomes the screen for various mind-blowing displays of animation every hour or so each evening. There are many different pre-programmed shows, each with different animation and music, and no two are repeated on any evening so you’ll see a different show every time.

Siegfried & Roy To Debut New Tiger Cubs at The Mirage
Earlier this week, The Mirage welcomed some new residents to the resort — six-week-old white, white-striped and golden tiger cubs. The cubs will be part of Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat attraction and the public will get its first chance to see them starting today, June 13th, 2008, which is also Siegfried’s 69th birthday.
“I am honored that our tigers will go on exhibit for my birthday and just in time for Father’s Day weekend,” said Siegfried in a video press release.
Added Roy, “While we …

Planet Hollywood to Host 21 Red Carpet Premiere Party
Looking for Hollywood glamour in Vegas? Then mark your calendars for March 12, which is when Planet Hollywood will host the star-studded red carpet premiere party for the movie 21.
The movie is based on Ben Mezrich’s book, “Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions,” which is inspired by a true story.
In the movie, Ben Campbell (played by Jim Sturgess) is a shy, brilliant M.I.T. student who finds the answer to his tuition woes in the cards…literally. He is recruited to join a group of the school’s most gifted students on weekend blackjack trips to Vegas where, armed with fake IDs, they proceed to win millions from the casinos.
Led by math professor Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey, who also produced the film), they count cards and employ an intricate system of signals to continuously grow their fortunes. Everything is rosy until Ben starts pushing the limits and comes under the radar of the casino’s head of security, Cole Williams (Laurence Fishburne). Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns), Aaron Yoo, Liza Lapira, Jacob Pitts and Josh Gad co-star as fellow students.
Also making appearances in the film are various Vegas landmarks including the Planet Hollywood resort (you can see the various light columns and other casino decor in some of the movie stills that are accompanying this article), The Venetian, Red Rock Resort and the Playboy Club at the Palms.

All of the stars of the movie are set to appear at the world premiere party, which starts at 9:30pm, so if you want to see any of them, I would suggest trying to find a viewing spot early. The event is actually occurring during the annual ShoWest movie theater industry convention, so it’s possible any number of other celebrities could show up for the red carpet stroll.
21 will be released by Sony Pictures in US theaters on March 28th. Until then, the studio and Trailer Addict have been kind enough to provide us with this theatrical preview of the film:
