Pink Ginger

Flamingo continues to impress me with their restaurants. If it weren’t for my friends visiting Vegas and staying there, I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to spend time at Flamingo. Twice this year, I’ve shown up for dinner, and twice I’ve been pleased. Last night we went to Pink Ginger, for Pan Asian cuisine. That means that you’re not just going for Chinese food, you have the option to order Japanese, Korean, or Thai food, as well.

I was dining with my Chinese grandparents, and we did go the Cantonese route on the menu. We started with the Ginger Wontons ($5.50) that were filled with crab and cream cheese, and the Peking Duck Sliders ($8.95) which is an appetizer version of Pekin Duck. Both of these hit the spot and the presentation included fresh orchids on the plate.

Dining beyond the Strip # 3: Sushi Fever

Las Vegas is more than just The Strip. Remember, over a million people live here, and they have to eat somewhere. So, if you are tired of the neon and need a distraction from the glitz of The Strip, we present a few Las Vegas dining choices that are worth the detour.

If you are looking for a sushi adventure away from the hustle and bustle of The Strip, catch the fever, Sushi Fever, that is. Sushi fever is a fairly low key sushi spot in the Northwest of Las Vegas. Depending on where on The …

Samba: Brazilian Steakhouse

Samba, the Brazilian Steakhouse at the Mirage, answered two calls. The loud one coming from our stomachs after waiting hours for a poker tournament to end, and the other one which wanted dinner to be something different than the typical fare. The first thing you notice about Samba when you enter is the open grill that stands in the center of the restaurant. The restaurant is decorated in a bright but cozy open setting in the back of the casino. Samba keeps the Brazilian tradition with their “Rodizio Experience,” a bottomless feast of Brazilian style barbecue. It is well worth it at the price of $31.95 per person, which includes all side dishes of black beans and rice, sweet fried plaintains, creamed spinach, farofa carrots, and a bottomless bowl of “Samba Salad” tossed tableside.

Lotus of Siam

Everyone says this Thai restaurant is one of the best in the country,
and while that claim may be hard to verify, Lotus of Siam is certainly
some of the best ethnic food in Sin City. Chef Saipin Chutima has won
just about every local accolade imaginable, and also boasts glowing
write-ups in Gourmet and other national food mags. The food is simply
astonishing and, for the uninitiated, it can be astonishingly spicy,
so start out on the short end of the 1-10 spice-o-meter. And don’t you dare forget to order sticky rice with mango for dessert. Lotus of Siam is a fairly long cab ride from the strip, but it’s worth every cent of the fare and more. Do not miss it.

Pampas Churrascaria Opens at The Desert Passage

Pampas ChurrascariaIf you’re a devoted carnivore when dining out, there’s a new restaurant opening Saturday, May 27, at the Desert Passage Shops at The Aladdin that might fit the bill.

Pampas Churrascaria is the name of this eatery that offers diners a taste of Brazil in the form of meat cooked rotisserie-style. This is then served by waiters on skewers, where the meat is sliced off right at your table.

Ra Sushi

Located in the Fashion Show Mall, directly across the street from the new Wynn Casino, Ra Sushi is a study in the new Vegas. No all you can eat specials, no buffets – this restaurant is all about the vibe. Once inside, you could easily be in any trendy sushi spot in New York, LA, or San Francisco. That’s not to say that Ra doesn’t have good food – in fact they do. If I would have to rate Ra, I would say (1 to 10) the food is a 7,the service an 8, and the atmosphere (if you like the modern hip atmosphere) an 8. A patio adds to the appeal, provided its cool enough to eat outside. While not cheap, Ra does have happy hour specials (between 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.) that can ease that crunch on the wallet. Sake enthusiasts will enjoy the selection of hot, and cold Sake.

That’s not a sausage, THIS is a sausage!

If all the signs for Nathan’s and Pink’s hot dogs just make you laugh, try Café Heidelberg for a real German sausage. This is an authentic German restaurant just a half a mile off the Strip. They have more than 20 different kinds of cold cuts, as well as traditional goulash, schnitzel, strudel, zigeurschnitzel, and kohlroulade. And lets not forget about the beer. This is the largest selection of German beer you’ll find in Vegas.

Sushi Bar at Nobu

Word on the street is that Nobu at the Hard Rock is the best sushi in town. I was dying to try this upscale modern Japanese celeb hang out, but had also been warned that you couldn’t get out of there for less than $200 per person. When a sushi-loving friend came to town, I looked into the realities of experiencing Nobu for considerably less. First of all, it is completely possible to have a fantastic meal at Nobu for under $100 per person—and we did it for $50 each including drinks and tip.
