FAO Schwartz is Full of Surprises

I was drawn to the big Trojan horse outside the FAO Schwartz toy store because someone had told me there was a $30,000 kid’s Hummer inside. Sure enough, there was a kids-sized jeep on the third floor with a sticker price larger than a lot of sedans. But it hardly made an impact on me. Neither did the grown ups dancing away on the large carpet piano like we saw in Tom Hanks’ BIG.

What did surprise me was the antique toy museum inside the Trojan horse, the make …

Non-Vegas Themed Gifts

If you’re in Vegas and need to pick up a gift for someone without the Vegas branding ablaze across the t-shirt, there are a few cool shops that you can try without winding up with a souvenir shot glass. Urban Outfitters at Mandalay Palace has the hip antithesis to chic crisp citywear, non-conformist apartment decor, and spirited pop culture gifts.
**Jen’s Vegas Travel Tip**
If you’re short on time and just need a token card and humor item, try the convenience store at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. They’ve got fun gender-comedic toiletries and sundries.

Chance by Chanel

Lady Luck works in mysterious ways and those of us who believe in superstitions do what we can to lure her along. Chanel, the premium brand in women’s fragrances and beauty acoutrements has come out with a scent perfect for us gamblers. Chance, as in, take one. It’s unassuming in it’s light pink packaging and tender name, but the fragrance does have the power of attraction. Perfect for the craps tables, if you ask me.

Ethel M Chocolate Factory

Only 15 minutes from the Strip is a chocolate-lover’s dream: the one and only Ethel M Chocolate Factory. The retirement project of one of Mars heirs (think Snickers and Mars Bars), the company is named after matriarch Ethel Mars. Not only is it named for her, but some of her own recipes are used in the manufacturing of the decadent treats offered.

Visitors to the Henderson facility can start off by taking a tour of the production process. A self-guided tour snakes through the glass-walled factory where you can see fillings and brittles being cooked, individual confections being enrobed in chocolate, and special molded chocolates being made. Video monitors are strategically placed throughout to explain the processes and ingredients.
