Helldorado Days Return to Las Vegas

helldoradodayslogo.jpgIt all started in 1934 when, following the completion of the Hoover Dam, civic leaders in conjunction with the Elks Lodge conceived an event that would foster community pride in the workers who had chosen to make Las Vegas their home.

Helldorado Days, as the event came to be known, is a month long festival of events that celebrates not only the city’s Wild West heritage, but it’s current designation as a tourist and gambling mecca. It has been held every year since its inception except for a seven-year stretch beginning in 1999. It was revived in 2005 for Las Vegas’ centennial celebrations and is back for another run this year, beginning on April 24.

Events scheduled during the 2006 Helldorado Days include a golf tournament, a trail ride through Red Rock Canyon, an art show/auction, a poker tournament and ten days of horse-related events including several rodeos. There will also be a parade downtown on May 13. The festival will wind up in May with a trap shooting tournament.

For more information on the calendar of events for this year’s Helldorado Days, sponsored by the Las Vegas Elks Lodge, visit www.lvhelldoradodays.com.

I grew up in Las Vegas and adored Helldorado days, I am thrilled they are back. I will make sure I visit home in May so I can catch some of the events. It was great fun. We can’t forget to celebrate Nevada history. With so many new people and all the modern casinos…too few remember our beginnings. It is a colorful and special history. I love HELLDORADO!!!!!
