Because the Palms has such a hipster reputation, I was excited when I happened upon two comp tickets to their Fantasy Market Buffet. It was my first time at their buffet and selected the dinner option over lunch or breakfast. At first glance, it was ordinary and surprisingly lacking in any trendy modifications both in food, and decor. On second glance, the food was third rate and barely up to cafeteria standards. Disappointed, I walked from station to international station, looking for hot fresh dishes to choose from. We arrived at 8:15 p.m. and though the chefs were still there putting out new dishes, even the best looking of our options seemed overcooked or already cool by the time we could get them back to our table.
The best of the lot seemed to be the Chinese station, the sauteed vegetables and the orange chicken, especially. The fried rice was pretty bad, the duck was awful, and the chicken, again, overdone. I was excited to try the Beef Gyro in the mediterranean section, but both the hummus and the beef were bland. I’ve had better buffet experiences at both the Plaza and the Golden Nugget downtown.
Note: Service was no better. They made us order our drinks at the register when we walked in, but didn’t bring them until we had to go ask fifteen minutes later. When our waitress finally did come to our table and ask how we were doing, I requested more napkins. Without acknowledgement she turned and walked away not to return.
