One of the most anticipated openings associated with the CityCenter project isn’t a hotel or a restaurant. It’s the new Cirque du Soleil show dedicated to the music and life of Elvis Presley.
Now, Vegas is no stranger to Elvis impersonators, and the like. But this new show will definitely take the American music icon’s legacy to new heights in Sin City.
Just as the music of the Beatles was used to tell a story, so too will this show use Elvis’ music to tell a story. But this time, the story will be about Elvis himself.
To whet people’s appetites for the show, Cirque has launched a website for the as-yet-to-be-titled show that will feature weekly behind-the-scenes videos following the creation of the show, with interviews and peeks at rehearsals.
“I call it an abstract biography,” says show director Vincent Patterson of the project in one video clip.
Adds Armand Thomas, Director of Creation, “It’s the kind of show that’s going to look like him…it’s going to be energetic. It’s going to be sexy. It’s going to be funny…it’s going to be bold.”
I personally can’t wait to see this show, and I think that it should prove to give a little boost to tourism, as Elvis is loved by millions of fans worldwide who will surely want to add this as a stop on their yearly vacation itineraries, just as they do Graceland in Memphis.
The Elvis show is set to open at Aria at CityCenter in December 2009. A special theater has been built at the hotel specifically to house this new Cirque project.
