Keep Cool In the Vegas Heat

Keep Cool In the Vegas Heat - drinking waterIn conjunction with the post about Vegas being the second sweatiest city in the nation, I’d like to offer a few tips to help keep the effects of the hot summer weather at bay.

1] Drink lots of water. Sounds simple, right? But it’s so easy to get caught up in drinking soda and all those free cocktails at the slots that we neglect to replace the water we lose through sweating. Experts say by the time you register thirst in hot weather, you’ve already lost enough body water to be partially dehydrated. So start the day with a glass of water and alternate another glass for every drink you have that isn’t water.

2] Wear natural fiber clothing, in light colors. Choose clothing that breathes, like cotton, as opposed to materials like polyester and nylon, which actually encourage perpiration. Lighter color clothing will also feel cooler than darker materials, which trap heat to your body.

3] Replace salt and minerals lost due to sweat. If you anticipate participating in a strenuous outdoor activity, like hiking in the Red Rocks, add fruit juice or sports drinks to your beverage choices to replace the extra minerals you’ll lose from the activity.

4] Avoid being outside in the afternoon. Generally from noon until 4 p.m. is when you’ll find the hottest part of the day. Take advantage of the climate controlled casinos and the monorail to avoid having to be outside in the scorching heat.

5] Wear sweatproof sunscreen. If you’ll be outside at all during the day, keep your skin protected from burning by choosing a sunscreen that is labeled sweatproof. You should reapply for every two hours you’re in the sun. Sure having a tan is nice, but so is not getting skin cancer.

If you follow these tips, you’ll find dealing with the summer heat in Vegas is easy to do.
