LVTwestival to Raise Funds for Charity

What happens when the power of Twitter is harnessed to do good around the world? The volunteer-organized Twestival will seek to answer that question next month on February 12, 2009.

On that date, a group of Las Vegas-area Twitter users are participating in an event that aims to raise money as part of a worldwide collaborative project to benefit charity:water.

The first Twestival occurred in London in September 2008, when a group of London-based Twitter users decided to organise an event where they could meet offline and socialize while raising money for a local homeless charity and participating in a food drive.  The majority of the event was organized in under two weeks, utilizing the power of Twitter and the talents of its users to make the event happen.

Then the organizers got the idea to take this to a global level, and currently over 160 cities worldwide will be participating in this year’s event.

The Las Vegas Twestival will be held at The Beatles REVOLUTION Lounge at The Mirage, which is reason enough to attend. All those attending will receive complimentary “Tweetini” cocktails, and there will be entertainment provided by a DJ, along with a raffle to win prizes donated by sponsors such as The Light Group (which manages several popular dining and nightlife outlets like Fix, Stack, and The Bank).

Tickets are available for a minimum $20 per person, and there are also Gold ($40) and Platinum ($60) donor level tickets that include extras, like five tickets to the raffle and more. 100% of proceeds from the donations will go to charity:water, whose mission is to bring clean, safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

According to charity:water, over a billion people on the planet don’t have easy access to clean drinking water. Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all disease in these areas. Drilling a well to get to the needed water that lies underground in many of these villages can cost between $4,000 and $12,000, and most simply cannot afford the price.

The LVTwestival group says they hope to raise enough money to build at least three wells.

All are welcome to attend, even if you aren’t a Twitter user, though you must be at least 21 to get inside the club.
