Reviews For The Producers Starting to Roll In

The Producers Las VegasIn the latest round of Broadway to The Strip, the Tony Award-winning musical “The Producers” officially opened at Paris Las Vegas last Friday (Feb 9). The Vegas version of the show features TV icon David Hasselhoff (“Knight Rider,” “Baywatch”) as the outrageously flamboyant Roger DeBris. Theater vets Brad Oscar and Larry Raben (who both starred in “The Producers” on Broadway) comprise the lead duo as the scheming, down-on-his-luck Max Bialystock and the neurotic bumbling book-keeper Leo Bloom.

Besides, the cast, the Vegas version of “The Producers” features a pared-down story to fit the new 90-minute length (with no intermission). This means songs like “Where Did We Go Right” and “Der Guten Tag Hop Clop” have faced the axe, but it seems as though the story hasn’t suffered. Playbill has a full list of numbers that have been cut from the Vegas production.

BroadwayWorld.com has posted a review and they call it a hit:

“In a word or three – lots of fun.

The cast is terrific. Comparisons are odious but they are probably inevitable. As Max, Brad Oscar is just grand. He knows the part; he inhabits it.

…but the big news here is David Hasselhoff as Roger DeBris. The crowd loved him and he looked to be having a ball. …he does the job very well and is clearly having a great time.”

The King of Luxe, Robin Leach, also chimed in with his review:

“Actors Brad Oscar and Larry Rabin who play the Broadway roles made famous by Nathan Lane as prying producer Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick as bumbling book-keeper Leo Bloom won powerful praise, but it’s the spotlight on David that shines brightest as he transforms from an outrageously over-the-top gay gadfly into a hysterically horrid Hitler for his fabulous flop for the foolish Fuhrer!”

The show’s creator, Mel Brooks, has been in town all week to see his new baby off. So far he’s been spotted having dinner at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at Paris Las Vegas and a late night snack at the Bellagio Cafe.

Hasselhoff says he will be with the show at least three months, after which he will resume taping of his new hit reality series, “America’s Got Talent,” on which he’s a judge. No word on whether a replacement has already been picked for when he leaves.
