Danny Way Attempts World Skateboarding Record

dannyway.jpgPro-skateboarder Danny Way is no stranger to attempting world records. His most famous stunt to date was jumping over the Great Wall Of China on his skateboard in 2005, and in searching for a new skateboarding record to break, Way found inspiration in The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s famous giant 82’3″ neon guitar.

On April 6 (rescheduled from April 5, due to rain), he will attempt to set yet another world record by doing a ‘Bomb Drop’. A giant specially-built quarter pipe will be erected in the parking lot of the Hard Rock. On one end is a platform atop a 46-foot high ramp. Way will freefall from the top of the platform on his board between 20 to 30 feet onto the ramp at about 30mph. He will then ride at a speed of up to 45mph across 64 feet of flat bottom into the world’s largest quarterpipe that is 27 feet tall at the other end.

A representative from the Guiness Book of World Records will be on hand to verify the structure’s height and to witness the attempt. The previous record for a “Bomb Drop” is held by Adil Dyani (Norway) who dropped a total drop of 30 feet 4 inches. Way’s attempt will be more than double that.

After Way’s attempt, four more of of the world’s top vert riding professionals — Bob Burnquist (X Games Gold Medallist), Pierre Luc “PLG” Gagnon (X Games Gold Medallist), Colin McKay (X Games Silver Medallist), and Jake Brown — will take to their boards for a demonstration.

The event takes place between 6 – 8 p.m. and is open and free to the public.
